The weekly report: still alive.


So how about that blogging once a week? Ted's like "Morgan, no one cares "..

But besides writing my wedding encyclopedia, I have actually been very busy. Shocking I know. But since I know everyone is dying to hear about how my week without sugar went, let me get into it...


Just kidding. That was yesterday. I really did cut out all sugar and carbs for a whole week plus one day, for a total of EIGHT days. I almost went for a ninth too, but I was sitting across from John at a Potbelly's watching him eat the most delicious sandwich while I was eating a salad, and I decided to be normal again. Eight days was long enough though for me to kind of reset and really get a good look at how I was eating. I mean, I'm thinking back to some days now where I had pancakes for breakfast, cookies after lunch and then would go out for ice cream later in the day. Or some days I would have cereal for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and pasta for dinner. Like I wasn't paying any attention to the fact that some days I would eat treats three times a day, or carbs three times a day. So it was good to realize that and try to make more of a balance.

A few things that changed my life:



I found this sugar-free gum at Target and loved it. I have been searching for the rest of the flavors actually. (Considering buying off Amazon lol.) It might just be vanilla flavor but it totally tricked me into thinking I was having something more. And it came in handy when the kids I watch were eating (my favorite) vanilla wafers, or when we went to a baseball game and everyone was eating ice cream. 


Lettuce wraps. BLT minus bread is surprisingly so good. 


Lara Bars. (Clearly I was craving some kind of dessert lol.) I loved the coconut cream pie one. Ingredients: dates, unsweetened coconut, almonds, cashews, extra virgin coconut oil. 



Plain Greek yogurt. I usually buy yogurt (greek or not) with fruit it in. Or at the very least vanilla flavored. But not surprisingly those are loaded with extra sugar. So I thought I would hate this, but it actually wasn't bad. I used it mostly in my smoothies or as sour cream. I've already gone though this Costco sized one and bought another. Try it. 


Trail mix. I'm the kind of person who always has to have snacks in my bag because when I get hungry I can't wait. But I usually have something like Special K bars, Belvita bars or chocolate covered protein bars (sugar, sugar, sugar). So this is just a better alternative. John was quick to point out though that the banana chips had sugar, so I limited those, but really I considered them no big deal.

Let me see....not pictured: Sweet potatoes! They're so versatile! I had them for breakfast twice in a row, just half a baked sweet potato with butter and cinnamon. (Just add cinnamon to this list too. On everything!) And then for dinner I would top it with sautéed spinach and mushrooms. Oh, and kind of already pictured above, smoothies! I've been having a smoothie everyday, mostly in the mornings, and it tastes like a treat but such a good way to get in a ton of fruits and for me, spinach. (I tried kale in it yesterday, no.) My favorite combo right now is spinach, mango, banana, greek yogurt and water. 

I also realized how sugar is basically thrown into everything. Like mayonnaise? Why? And I ate a handful of peanuts when I was babysitting one day out of desperation and then checked the ingredients to see "corn syrup solids." What is that?!

I know this isn't news to anyone. I didn't invent anything here, just saying what I did and what worked for me. And there's nothing wrong with spreading a little healthy ideas around right? So was it hard? Yeah. Was it that hard? No. I think it was necessary for me to check myself. And yes I felt soo much better. That was the biggest thing. It works people. It also helps to have great supporters..

But yeah, I'm back to business ordering a whole baguette and chocolate chip cookies from Panera. Just kidding, the bread was for John but the cookie was for me. The new plan is to limit my carbs, and to only "treat" myself when it's really worth it. And yesterday I felt like it was worth it. Don't ask lol. 

So other than that, life is life. I went to the dog park AGAIN this week by myself and conversed with other people and I didn't die. So things are going well, can't complain. Looking forward to this weekend since Johns been working crazy hours, so hoping to get to spend a little quality time with him. (And watch the Teen Mom 2 finale. Everyone has an embarrassing guilty pleasure right?)

  1. Those Larabar flavors sound SO GOOD. I love bars like that. Most of the ones I've tried probably have sugar... But I do love Lara bars too! I really need to start buying sweet potatoes because DELICIOUS! Seriously, this would be hard to do since sugar is in EVERYTHING. So crazy. I applaud you for doing it!

    1. Sweet potatoes are my favorite thing right now, I don't know why I wasn't buying them more! And I really want to do one of those sweet potato casseroles for a thanksgiving dish with the marshmallows on top haha. I love those things!

  2. You did it!!! Plus an extra day! I seriously need to do this. I've gained 5-6? pounds this summer and while it's not a lot, it's definitely noticeable to be now that jeans are being pulled back out haha. It's the sugar that gets me - I swear I'm addicted! Did you cut out fruit too?

    1. HA! No I ate tons of fruit! I know that's considered sugar, but I just wanted to cut out the refined sugar. Like the cereal, and doughnut and brownie variety sugar haha. It's so hard.

  4. yay you blogged FINALLY. haha :) yay for your diet, sounds like it is awesome!!! I love using greek yogurt as sour cream! cause I love sour cream and I feel like I'm being healthy or something when I use GY instead. I want those luna bars, YUMMM. That's smart to make your own trail mix!! Jason LOVES trail mix but he is so picky on what kind/brand he gets haha I'm like you, I always have to have a snack in my bag. Usually almonds or gold fish lately (healthy...) Also those texts from John/your dad are awesome hahah andddd now i'm craving cupcakes. Thanks Morgan's dad!

    1. Sour cream is just so good! I will use it on anything that I have a reason too lol. And I used to have a real big goldfish problem. I use to always have a bag of the parmesan ones in my purse. I kind of want some now thinking about it...they aren't THAT bad right?!

  5. Once a week? Better than me! That is awesome about the sugar/carbs! I think I would have to cut out everything I ate this week if I tried that. I had a bagel for breakfast everyday and leftover spaghetti everyday for lunch. Clearly I enjoy variety... I may have to try doing that some time out of curiosity of my will power at least! Teem Mom?! HA love it. I forgot it premiered over the summer so now I am a month behind because I have to wait until the old episodes pop up on mtv.com on Sunday's, but they were like 5 episodes prior! Which...I just realized I forgot to watch it Sunday...yesss!

    1. Hahaha I do that too, have the same thing every day. I get obsessed with the same things, or I'm just trying to eat all the leftovers. I love cinnamon raisin bagels so much...And yes we watch Teen Mom, I don't know why, but we do. John makes fun of it the entire time, but we still watch it. We love Jenelle lol. We have to watch it on mtv.com too because we don't have cable.

    1. I would totally recommend that gum, it really did the trick in a pinch. I looked them up and it looks like they have some other really cool flavors so I'm like checking everywhere I go for them now!

  8. I think I need to do this! Some days I eat no sugar and some days I eat WAY too much so this would be good to get myself back on track! I saw that gum at Target the other day and almost bought it but I wasn't sure how it would taste. Now that I hear it's delicious I will definitely have to pick some up!
