"So, you like really like your last name?" and other quotes from John..

I've always been a big fan of these "husband/boyfriend says" posts (loved Mattie's recently!) because I'm nosy for one and just find it so fascinating to see how other couples are with eachother, haha. And two because let's face it, those guys are a big part of these spaces. Mine in particular. I talk about John a lot. Sometimes I think too much..but hey, he really is my life and these are my memories/stories etc, right? I've always kept a list of funny things John says, mostly in my phone, and I got so pissed once when I accidentally deleted all of my notes. I was most sad about losing that one and also the measurements for his neck (for dress shirts, such important information!!) and my running list of possible future child names, haha. (Embarrassing, but it's true lol.)
{ initial necklace - copied off Candace, from etsy shop here. customized iPhone case c/o the nice people at CaseApp. old random apple trinket from Goodwill, Batavia IL.}

So, I'll start here with a quick story - the only thing John cared about when we got married was that I change my last name. That meant more to him than anything else. I wanted to too, there was never a question that I wouldn't, I just thought it was cute that's what being married meant to him. I'm sure most girls out there are with me when I say, it's a weird thing. Instead of thinking about it too much, and potentially getting sad over it, I thought of it as an opportunity to be a "new me" in a way. I fully embraced it, almost obsessively haha. So when I had the opportunity to design this iPhone case (do it guys, its so fun!) I knew I'd do an apple of some sort. And since I'm not artsy myself, I bought this watercolor apple print off Etsy for like $2.50 and get my moneys worth (lol) I printed one off and framed a big 8x10 of it also. And I decided to keep the rest simple with the pale pink background. When I showed it to John, his reaction was: "so, you like really like your last name?" And I like died laughing because it wasn't the reaction I anticipated. Later on he did tell me that the apple print was ugly..which it what I was pretty sure he would say, haha.

I think he's the funniest person on the planet. It's not like he's a huge joker in the usual comedic kind of way, he's just always surprising me with the things he says. (Although sometimes he does act super funny in that way. He's good at impressions lol.) Not everyone gets his humor, it might be an "acquired thing" haha, but I laugh constantly at the things he says. So here's a few more quotes from John that I love, in no particular order:

- One morning I offered him a piece of fruit (I'm always trying!) and he goes, "no thanks, all the colors just look so good there in the bowl."

- While watching me write in my food journal one day (I don't always do this, I go through phases lol): "I can't wait for 100 years from now when someone finds your food diary."

-Watching the Shameless premiere and I asked him, "Do you still love Emmy Rossum?" And he answers "well, I got married..." (For the record he says he loves Fiona, not Emmy lol.)

- Laying my clothes out on the bed one morning: "Oh that's cute, Forever 21?"

- I was explaining to him that you have to have a quirky tag line on Instagram and his advice: "If I had an Instagram it would say something like - Nope the grass isn't greener. All dust and tumbleweeds over here."

- Out at lunch once reading over the menu, "what's rosé?"

-Stopped at a stoplight while he's driving one day and I go, "I love my life." And without skipping a beat he goes, "you're welcome."

- For a while I was putting cinnamon in everything and talking repeatedly about how good it is for you. (Like I really know lol.) One morning he see's me making a tuna sandwich for his lunch and goes, "you're not putting cinnamon in that, are you?"

- I'm listening to music on the computer for like an hour and finally he goes, "what is this, karaoke?"

- Me asking if I should eat the leftover coleslaw that's been in the car for a while, "well I don't know. Do you want to try out the new emergency center down the road? (Not even funny because he had BAD food poisoning last year. Never wrote about it, but bad, bad.)

- (This one's old) Walking through the very crowded Houston rodeo last year I hear him whisper to himself, "I hate people."

- One morning I crawled back into bed after he woke up (I had been awake forever) and I said, "you're my best friend" and he says back, "I think I'm your only friend." (True statement lol.)

-Last weekend I was driving us home and Fifth Harmony's "Worth it" was playing and he goes, "what do they want?" And I was like, "huh???" because we were sitting in pretty much silence. And he  points to the radio and goes, "these girls. What do they want?" And then I started listening to the words..."give it to me, I'm worth it" over and over, hahaha.

-Everyday: "is there a new blog post?"

Love you John. Thanks for my last name and for always keeping me l-o-l-ing.

  1. I was ready to ditch my last name and then a few weeks after I did change it I embraced it even more...family drama crap. So I was happy to do it and not keep it as a middle name or hyphenate or anything. Plus Dulka is way more fun to say. I think Apfel is a fun last name too.

I love this! "That's cute, Forever 21?" was so so funny to me! Haha. Michael like never notices my clothes. Unless he thinks they're weird haha.

Also, about that, "I'm your only friend" comment (which is pretty true for us too haha), we were watching How I Met Your Mother last night and Barney and Robin were dating and Lily & Marshall tried to be couple friends with them but it basically bombed... So then they found new couple friends and there was a montage of Barney & Robin eating their feelings and wearing sweatpants and crying like they just went through a breakup and the song 'All by myself' was playing and Michael was like, "That's us." Hahaha forever alone!

    1. Oh he was totally making of me with the Forever21 thing, it was a very cheap t-shirt lol. I never got the feeling anyone was mad about me changing my name, especially because my Mom uses her maiden name so it's really just my Dad and sister, but I did get comments like "you did that so fast." And it's like..duh, why wouldn't I? I don't know, it's weird. I think it'd be another story if he had a weird last name though...like a long one with 100 letters lol. I do not watch HIMYM..(someday I will!!) but that sounds exactly like us too. I know some couples who have like a million friends and are always with other people and I always wonder if they can get along alone or not. I think being able to stay home alone on a Saturday night together isn't a bad thing. (or at least I tell myself these lies lol.)

  3. Haha I cracked up at the Forever 21 one and the one about somebody finding your food diary. Jon is always making me laugh too. I have a really mild Wisconsin accent and he always makes fun of it, or he'll quote things my mom says to me in a Wisconsin accent and it seriously cracks me up. His mom impression gets me every single time. I actually really like your phone case! I think the water color is awesome! I was super excited to change my last name too! Probably because it was going from Heckman (which is AWFUL!) to Tate and Tate is just WAY better! It was also like, the most natural thing in the world to change my last name. I think I signed "Heckman" once after I changed my name and that was it!

    1. Lol awww I love Wisconsin accents! Seriously! Everyone sounds like the nicest person ever lol. I don't think I've ever signed my name wrong since, but that's probably because I am still trying to make my signature look pretty so I'm always paying so much attention lol. I would say that is the worst part. I had the best signature before and I feel like it's going to take ten years to get my new one to not look like a 3 year olds cursive lol.

  6. Oh yeah I was excited to change my name! I kept my middle name and completely dropped my maiden. I mean this was my third last name and I was excited to have a single name that meant something for the rest of my life. Also, I never have to spell my name to people anymore. If people ask how to spell Young, I judge lol. I love the instagram one...funny, so true!

  7. These are all hilarious! I am getting married in June & looking forward to changing my name! I've never been a huge fan of my last name so I'm kind of the same way as you-- starting over! Although I'm going to be changing it to a long & usually misspelled Bohemian name, haha. I laughed out loud about the Forever 21 comment & the new blog post one. My fiance says the same kind of stuff, especially about blog posts!

  8. This is amazing. I need to start writing down the things Nick says! And I felt the same way about changing my last name - my old one was so long and hard to spell/pronounce that I fully embraced O'Hare, especially when we lived in Chicago and I could say 'like the airport'!

    1. Lol I always had to say "Wray with a W" so I don't mind having to spell Apfel for everyone. And yes you should. Guys are so funny we can all laugh together at them lol.

  9. I love these kind of posts too. It's great getting to see the dynamic between other couples. I've done a post like this, but I need to get better at writing little things down so I can remember them! There are some good ones in there haha. I liked the last one - is there a new blog post today? Because I can relate because Eric is the only person who gets excited about my new post. I can also relate to the "I think I'm your only friend" comment haha. I never actually changed my last name (even though my blog is after his last name), and we've been married almost two years. I'm glad he didn't care about it, cause I didn't realize what a hard time I would have letting go of this name I've built for myself! I'm pretty stubborn like that. And that phone case is awesome.
